The more births I attend, the more passionate I become about the importance of documenting these moments. Every significant milestone in our lives is recorded: When you graduate from High School, you get senior photos. When you get engaged, what is one of the first things you book? A photographer, right? Someone to document all of the details of your day so you won’t forget. Why wouldn’t birth be the same way? Your baby’s birth is one of the most emotional and momentous occasions in your life! It deserves to be photographed and remembered!
Today I’m going over five reasons to hire a birth photographer! Next week I will be going over another topic that I think is important and we should talk more about – Dad’s and Birth Photography. Stay tuned for that!
1. You won’t remember much
Birth is a whirlwind of activity – whether you’re delivering at home, in a hospital or birth center; something is going on at all times. Contractions, breathing, a nurse is taking your temperature; your partner is trying not to freak out while they listen to you make noises they’ve never heard you make before. Pretty soon 20+ hours have gone by, and you’re pushing your baby out, and you can’t even believe that it’s real! Add to that all of the hormones, endorphin’s and sleep deprivation, many of the details of your baby’s birth story will fade. But having professional photographs, you’ll be able to look back and remember with perfect clarity.
2. Fathers should be in the photos too.
It never fails after I deliver a birth gallery, the mother ALWAYS comments on how much she loves the pictures of her husband supporting her. Those are always a favorite. And for a good reason! Seeing your partner go through that process with you, never leaving your side, encouraging you when you feel like giving up is priceless. If he has to worry about taking photos during and after the birth, he will miss out on so many beautiful moments. Let him support you and hold his new baby and leave the photos to a professional!
3. Quality Images are Important
iPhones can do amazing things now, but if you want to guarantee you’ll have beautiful images in an often dark delivery room, you’ll need a professional. Birth photographers have proper equipment and lenses to be able to take crisp photos in low light without a flash. And this is important so as not to disturb your labor.
4. A permanent reminder of how strong you are.
I’m inspired after each birth I attend! A mother’s strength and determination to bring her baby into the world is something not everyone gets to witness. I want you to have permanent proof that you are INCREDIBLE. There will be days you don’t feel like a superhero, but all you need to do is look back on your birth photos as a reminder that you are!
5. Sharing the images with your child
Kids love seeing pictures of themselves as babies. As they grow up, you’ll be able to share these images with them, and they’ll see the amazing bond and incredible love you had for them from the moment you met. These pictures can be passed down for generations to serve as an heirloom, documentation of the beginning of a legacy.
