Why you need 3/4 month old Milestone Photography
It’s pretty firmly established how much I love newborn photography and how important I think it is. But you know what photo sessions sometimes don’t get enough love? Milestone sessions! Photos taken at specific points during your baby’s development (3-4 months = holding up head, smiling, 6-7 months = sitting up, 12 months = crawling, standing, first birthday!) You may be tempted to skip one or two of these but I highly urge you not to – each milestone is special and shows a different stage of your amazing baby!
Today I want to focus on that first milestone session, when your little sweetie is about 3 or 4 months old. They have just exited the squishy newborn stage and are starting to really take in the world and become more interactive. Babies at this age can usually hold their heads up pretty well, allowing for some adorable poses (like the classic “baby under a blanket” shot) plus it means that they’re able to take in more of the world around them. One of my favorite things is to watch and photograph the look of wonder in a baby’s eyes. Everything is new and fascinating, everything is something to learn and explore. We are never more full of awe than we are as babies, so getting to witness and chronicle that is an amazingly profound experience. This tiny human’s personality is starting to shine through which can be adorable, hilarious (they may have discovered their feet and I dare you to tell me something cuter and funnier than a baby playing with its feet), and even moving. Is there anything more heart warming than your baby smiling at you? Wouldn’t you love to have some of those first smiles and expressions of recognizing you frozen in time? When they grow older you’ll find yourself struggling to remember exactly the way they used to tilt their head or what they looked like when they first caught a glimpse of you. That’s why photography is so important, because memories are flawed but these pictures are forever. You can look at them and see that sweet little nose wrinkle and it will take you back to that moment in time and what your baby was like at that age. Which was perfect. And you will be so happy that those memories won’t be able to fade away, you’ll always be able to see that version of your baby – even when they’re…[[gasp]]…a teenager.
