What to Wear for a Maternity Session

So you just booked a maternity session, now what?? You know you want to look good, but aren’t sure what things to wear that will be pretty and flattering. I’m here to help! Besides the Client Closet which has many gowns and dresses for you to borrow for your session, I am outlining some tips for What to Wear so you can be best prepared for your maternity session!

Avoid strong colors. Stick to solid colors in white or pastels. That whole “no white after labor day” can go sit in syrup. Whites/creams/beige/grey – they all photograph beautifully, no matter what the location for the session.

Avoid trends. If you’re investing in quality maternity photos, you don’t want to look back in 20 years thinking “why was I wearing that?!” because something is now out of style. You’ll never regret a simple flowy dress and sticking to neutral, pastel tones.

Avoid heavy makeup. You’ll likely be using my hair and makeup team before your session with me, but keep in mind that you want to look like an enhanced version of yourself, and that’s it. No need for crazy makeup. Same goes for nails! I love simple white polishes like Essie’s Blanc, Angel Hair, or Ballet Slipper.

Choose a fit that’s right for you. Not all pregnant bodies are created equal, so choose a dress or outfit that will accentuate your bump. I love anything with a waistband that sits above the bump because it essentially gives you the waist you’re missing due to pregnancy! I also see a lot of women shying away from form-fitting outfits. Don’t! Embrace those pregnancy curves, mama!!! We wanna see that bump! And wearing oversized clothing will actually make you look larger than you are.

Don’t feel limited to just a dress. I also have a couple of SUPER comfy, off the shoulder sweaters that are perfect for a laid-back maternity session. A simple white tank and jeans is always classic as well!

Most importantly: wear what you feel best in. Really! I can sit here and give you all these tips for what has worked for my clients in the past, and you could be thinking “But that’s totally NOT me. I love bright colors and patterns!” Well then mama, you go for it!!!!
